Plug in hybrid update

Update January 2022

EV batteries don’t like this cold. Sharing my experience with the Plug-in hybrid at -30C. Please note: Any EV battery at -20C loses about 55% -60% of its range. In full electric range our 12 kwh has a range of 18 km (12 miles) at minus 24 C. temperatures. Compared to 40-45 km range at about plus 20 C. temperatures.

2021 BMW 330e plug in hybrid update November 15, 2021:

The past few months we did mostly city driving. Our average fuel consumption stands at 1.6 liters per 100 km. Plug in hybrid vehicles are great for commuting to work, or short trips under 50 km a day. We drove 1869 km on 32 liters of fuel in the past 6 weeks. 1469 km on pure electricity or hybrid combined. Any speed over 110 km in hour, I switch to sports mode to conserve the battery.

After at total mileage of 10250 km, our average fuel consumption is 1.8 liter per 100 km. Please take note, my wife Kimberly is a super environmentalist and I’m the opposite. I love sports mode and stepping on it when ever the road condition and speed limits allows. Kimberly is driving only electric mode in the City. Surprisingly, she never uses fuel or the motor.

Here is our total mileage since we bought the car in March 2021:

Total mileage since new:
13586 km total
About 4800 km in hybrid/sports mode
8865 km pure electricity
2.9 liters per 100 km after 13586 of driving.

Flo or Charge Point charging stations:
(Public level 2, 6.2 KWH charging stations)
$2.00 per hour
Charging from 0% – 100%
3 hours = 10 KWH
Total cost: $6.00
10 KWH of driving = 36-45 km total
pure electricity range in the city.

Note:
Flo charges at level 3 charging $20 per hour, 50 KWH. Charge times are different for different electrified vehicle types.

Charging at home nightly:
(Level 2, 5.8 KWH charger)
$0.069 cent per KWH (Enmax)
Charging from 0% – 100%
3 hours = 10 KWH
Total cost: $0.69
10 KWH of driving = 30-36 km total
pure electricity range in the city.

Note:
Charging battery completely while driving cost approx. 4 liters of fuel = $6.20 with current fuel prices.
